SHORELINE -- The NWAACC's No. 1-ranked Tritons beat Shoreline twice at Meridian Park on Sunday, 11-0 and 11-7 to complete the four-game series sweep with the Dolphins. Edmonds Community College improved to 16-2 overall, 4-0 in the North Region.

EdCC starters Colin Samuelson and Andrew Kemmerer each notched wins in the twinbill while the Triton offense collected 25 base hits and 22 runs against SCC hurlers.

The Triton offense didn't get started until the third inning of game one, however. EdCC would send 10 men to the plate in the frame and score six runs. TC Florentine picked up the day's first RBIs when he slapped a bases-loaded double down the right field line.

Edmonds tacked on runs in every inning from that point on in the 7-inning contest while Samuelson was in total control on the mound. The sophomore improved to 2-1 on the year with the complete-game shutout.

Florentine, Tanner Wessling and Ryan Archibald each had two hits for EdCC.

The nightcap looked like it was going to be another lopsided tilt when the Tritons scored seven runs in their first at-bat. Keanu Puha did the most damage, ripping a three-run triple. Chris Osborne smashed a three-run homer in the second to make the score 10-0 EdCC.

The Dophins (4-10, 0-4 NWAACC) didn't go away, however, plating three runs off Kemmerer in the bottom of the second and two more in the fifth. The Tritons added an insurance run in the seventh with SCC scoring twice in the eighth for the final runs of the day.

Kemmerer upped his season mark to 3-0, though the sophomore wasn't as sharp as usual. Kemmerer lasted five innings before being replaced by Torin Dooley in the sixth. Dooley threw the final four frames for Edmonds.

Florentine went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Triton offense with Archibald collecting three hits with Matt Becker going 2-for-4.

Edmonds plays Olympic four times next weekend, with the first two at Triton Field Saturday. First pitch is at 1:00 pm.

Tritons Open Up North League Action With Two Wins

LYNNWOOD - Starters Zach Johnson and Austin Lee pitched the EdCC baseball team to a pair of league wins against visiting Shoreline on a rainy Saturday at Triton Field. Edmonds won the 7-inning opener 5-0 and then took the 9-frame nightcap 7-1.

The two victories push the No. 1-ranked Tritons to a 14-2 overall record. Edmonds is now 2-0 in North Region play. The Dolphins fell to 4-8, 0-2.

Game one was scoreless through three and a half innings. In fact, EdCC didn't get a hit off of SCC starter Mitch Mondor until the bottom of the fourth. That's when the Tritons broke through for three runs, capped by a two-run double from Ben Roquet. Edmonds collected three two-baggers in the frame.

Bryan Orendor tripled home Roquet in the sixth and later scored on a Dolphin error for the fifth and final run of the game.

Johnson improved to 3-0 by going the distance. The sophomore lefty allowed five hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Roquet, Orendor and Conor Plaisance had two hits apiece.

Lee nearly matched Johnson in game two, carrying a shutout into the seventh inning. By that time the Tritons were ahead 6-0, scoring four in the home half of the first. Keanu Puha singled home two in the inning with TC Florentine adding a RBI hit and Chris Osborne walking with the bases loaded.

Edmonds added a run in the third, one in the sixth and one in the eighth.

Lee (3-0) would go seven innings, yielding just one run on seven hits with six strikeouts. John Evans tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth to close out the day and the Dolphins.

Matt Becker went 3-for-4 with two RBI for EdCC with Florentine, Puha, Ryan Budnick and Tyler Baker each adding two hits to the Triton offensive attack.

The two rivals head over to Meridian Park in Shoreline on Sunday to complete their four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

EdCC Wraps Up Non-League Play with a Win

LYNNWOOD - Left fielder Keanu Puha's 3-run inside the park home run was the difference in a 7-4 EdCC win over Pierce College at Triton Field Wednesday. NWAACC No. 1-ranked Edmonds Community College finishes non-league play with a 12-2 record.

Center fielder TC Florentine tripled and scored on a Raider error to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead after one inning. Pierce evened the score in the second with a run off EdCC starter Matt Becker. Edmonds answered with a run in the third when first baseman Ryan Budnick singled home Puha with a two-out hit.

The Raiders evened the score in the fourth. The two teams remained knotted at 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth.  With two outs, shortstop Ryan Archibald was hit by a pitch and third baseman Ben Roquet doubled. Puha then lined a two-out liner to center field. The hit shot past the Pierce defender and rolled to the wall for a 3-run homer.

The two sides exchanged two runs in the eighth, Connor Plaisance singling in both Triton runs with yet another two-out hit.

Triton closer Tyler Reeves closed out the game with a quick 1-2-3 ninth. Reeves earned the save for relief pitcher Josh Evans (1-0) who threw 1.2 frames of shutout ball. Becker lasted five innings.

Pierce fell to 4-7 on the year.

EdCC will host North Region foes Shoreline on Saturday for a doubleheader that starts at 1 pm. The four-game series moves to Meridian Park on Sunday.

EdCC Baseball Splits With Lower Columbia

LONGVIEW -- Two of the NWAACC's best teams split a non-league double header on Sunday, Lower Columbia winning the opener 5-3 with Edmonds taking the seven-inning nightcap 9-5. 

EdCC heads into North Region play with a 11-2 overall record. The Tritons hope to return to LCC's Story Field in May as it is the site of the NWAACC championship tournament.

Torin Dooley (1-1) was hung with the loss in game one after the sophomore allowed five earned runs in a 4.1 inning start. Kameron Miner tossed 3.2 frames of scoreless relief but the EdCC offence could only muster three runs off of two Red Devil hurlers. 

Edmonds scored first but LCC (12-5) plated five runs over the second, third and fourth innings to go up 5-1. The Tritons pushed two runs across in the eighth and had two runners on in scoring position an inning later but could not come up with the game-tying knock.

TC Florentine, Chris Osborne and Tyler Baker each had two hits in the loss which snapped EdCC's 10-game win streak.

Notching the win was Hunter Wells (3-0) who went seven strong innings for LCC, surrendering just one run on seven hits. Seth Pedersen got the save after escaping the Triton threat. 

Early on in game two it seemed like EdCC was headed for another loss after LCC scored five times in its first at-bat. Those would be the last runs for the Red Devils, however.

Keanu Puha singled home two runs in the fourth, bringing EdCC to within two runs of the home team Devils. That score held up until a wild top of the seventh.

An Edmonds walk to lead off the inning was followed by what could have been a double-play grounder that was instead mishandled by LCC. Another walk loaded the bases and another grounder was booted, allowing two Tritons to score. Bryan Orendor singled home the go-ahead run and Ryan Archibald doubled home two more runs with a third scoring on yet another error.

The six runs made a winner of Austin Lee (2-0) who tossed three perfect frames of relief for Edmonds. Colin Samuelson started and yielded five runs, though none after the first inning.

EdCC had just seven hits in game two, with both Puha and Ryan Budnick each collecting two hits. Puha and TC Florentine had two RBI apiece. 

The Tritons host Shoreline for a twinbill on Saturday, March 29. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.

Triton Win Streak Reaches 10

LONGVIEW -- Starter Andrew Kemmerer dominated in the opener while a ninth-inning rally in the nightcap gave the Tritons a non-league sweep of Lower Columbia College Saturday at Story Field. The 2-0 and 8-7 wins were the tenth straight for the Edmonds Community College baseball team which improved to 10-1 on the year. The Red Devils dropped to 11-4.

Kemmerer, a sophomore who was the Triton closer in 2013, did not allow a hit until the bottom of the seventh inning. The single that dropped in front of center fielder TC Florentine, was the lone hit for the Red Devils in game one. 

The Tritons got the only run they needed in the top of the first when Matt Becker led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a fly ball from Jamie Umbinetti. 

Edmonds tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, Florentine singling home Keanu Puha who had reached via a walk. 

Lower Columbia picked up its first hit in the bottom of the inning but that runner was erased when Becker made a running catch in right and threw to first for a double play.

Kemmerer (3-0) did the rest, going the distance for the shut out in a game that took just 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. The EdCC right-hander out-dueled Lower Columbia starter Trevor Lane (0-1). Lane yielded two runs on just four hits.

Game two looked like an early run away for Edmonds as the Tritons took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. But the Red Devils plated three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to take a 7-6 advantage. 

Everything was going Lower Columbia's way at that point while EdCC was struggling at the plate, on the mound and in the field.

Fortunes changed fast in the ninth, however. Florentine led off the frame with a single and stole second. After one out, a double from Umbinetti scored Florentine to tie the game at 7-7. A two-out triple from Ryan Archibald plated Umbinetti and put EdCC back up by a run.

Tyler Reeves took the ball for Edmonds in the ninth, and though he gave up a walk and allowed a single, he was able to close out the contest. pick up a save and preserve the sweep.

Zach Johnson started for the Tritons and was cruising until the fifth. Austin Lee tossed a scoreless sixth but reliever Josh Evans yielded four Red Devil runs in the seventh. Alex Kuniyoshi (1-0) stopped the bleeding by throwing 1.2 scoreless innings. 

Edmonds had just four hits in game one but collected 11 in game two. Florentine -- the only player with two hits in the opener -- was 2-for-5 with two runs scored in the nightcap. Umbinetti was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Chris Osborne was 3-for-5, scored twice and stole two bases.

Edmonds and LCC will play another doubleheader at Story Field on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon. 

Edmonds Baseball on a Roll

LYNNWOOD -- The Edmonds CC baseball team keeps rolling, beating Vancouver Island twice on Saturday at Triton Field to extend its win streak to eight games. Both non-league contests were cut short due to the 10-run rule, EdCC winning the opener 14-0 (5) and the nightcap 13-2 (8).

The Tritons scored eight runs in the first inning of game one and never looked back, pushing four more across in the second and single runs in the third and fourth. When the Mariners failed to score in the top of the fifth the game was called.

Kameron Minor (1-0) started and earned his first collegiate win with a five-inning, three-hit effort. 

The EdCC offense collected 12 hits, including home runs from Ryan Budnick (2), Matt Becker and Jaime Umbinetti. Both Becker and Umbinetti had four RBI.

Edmonds scored first in the nightcap but were briefly down 2-1 after the Mariners scored twice in the third. The Tritons responded with a run in the home half of the inning to even the score. Edmonds broke out with 11 unanswered runs from the fourth inning on. A two-run triple from Becker in the eighth stopped play.

Austin Lee (1-0) started and earned the win for the Tritons. Josh Evans, Alex Kuniyoshi and Tyler Reeves all threw in relief and non were scored upon.

Edmonds added two more home runs in the game. Brian Orendor's shot left the yard while Ben Roquet's was an inside-the-parker. 

Right fielder Chris Osborn was 2-for-4 with four RBI, Becker had two hits and three RBI.

Edmonds was supposed to travel to Pierce on Sunday for a twinbill but those contests were called off due to rain and poor field conditions. 

Softball Notches Sweep of South Puget Sound

LYNNWOOD -- Thanks to an explosive offense and gritty relief pitching from Madisyn Napier, the Edmonds CC softball team recorded a sweep of South Puget Sound Friday afternoon at Triton Field, 14-9 and 15-14(8). The doubleheader sweep is the first for the EdCC softball program since May 12, 2006. With the two wins the Tritons improved to 3-3 on the season.

Edmonds scored 29 runs on 32 hits in the wild twinbill. The Tritons pounced for seven runs after two innings in the opener, but the visiting Clippers would plate five runs in the top of the third off EdCC starter Faith Clark.

Edmonds responded with four in the home half of the inning but SPSCC kept battling, scoring three more in the fourth off of Napier. The Triton sophomore settled in, however, and would only yield one more run over the next two frames, which included a scoreless sixth and seventh. The Tritons added two more runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth for the 14-9 final.

Three Tritons had three hits apiece: Napier, Alex Deaver and Mallori Cossell. Deaver scored three times and drove in four runners. Cossell and Shawna Steele had two RBI apiece.

The nightcap started bleakly for Edmonds when the Clippers plated seven runs in their first at-bat. It was 8-0 SPSCC after an inning and a half. Napier, who started in right field, was called back into the circle with one out in the second. The converted pitcher would throw 6.2 frames in relief and give her team a chance to get back into the game.

That's just what the Tritons did.

Edmonds scored one run in the second, three in the third and then exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Designated player Arista Honey homered and doubled in two in that inning -- just missing her second home run by inches.

The score was now 11-10 Edmonds but the lead quickly vanished when the Clippers scored three times in the sixth and once more in the seventh.

But the never-say-die Tritons came through with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to even the score at 14-all and send the game into extra-innings.

Napier set the Clippers down without a run in the eighth and set up EdCC with a chance to walk away with the win in the home half of the inning.

Lexie Gray started things off with a single but was eliminated on a force out. First baseman Savannah Fortney reached on the force and was replaced by pinch-runner Anna-Nicole Murphy. After another hit and a walk to Honey, Deaver lined a single to right to plate Murphy with the winning run.

Napier (2-1) not only picked up the win in both games, in game two she was 4-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBI, two inside-the-park homers and a stolen base. Deaver, Honey, Steele and Cossell had two hits each with Steele and Fortney both driving in two.

LYNNWOOD – The EdCC softball team snapped a nearly five-year long losing streak when it defeated Green River 9-8 Tuesday afternoon at Triton Field. It was the team’s first win under new head coach Shawna Juarez and the program’s first victory since April 5, 2009. The Lady Tritons lost in the nightcap 17-12 and are now 1-3 on the year.

The visiting Gators were in control of the opener, taking an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Edmonds scored four runs in that frame to close to within three. Lexie Gray led off the inning with a walk and scored on a double from Ryanne Fazio.  Three more RBI doubles later, from Alex Deaver, Arista Honey and Shawna Steele, had EdCC down by a score of 8-5.

Gray started the pivotal sixth inning rally with a walk and steal of second. With two outs on the board, the Gators made two errors which scored Gray and allowed Fazio to reach base. Deaver then walked, bringing up Honey who blasted a 3-run homer to dead center field. That shot gave EdCC its first lead since the second inning.

Relief pitcher Faith Clark set the Gators down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and Edmonds notched its first win in a too long of a time.

The Tritons had nine hits in game one, five of which were of the extra-base variety. Fazio, Honey and Steele were each 2-for-4 with Honey driving in four runs. 

Madisyn Napier started for Edmonds and lasted 4.2 innings before being replaced by Clark (1-0) who tossed 2.1 scoreless frames.

Edmonds looked like it might be on its way to a sweep after scoring four runs in its first at bat of game two. Clark lost her release point in the third, however, and allowed seven Gator runs. 

The Tritons responded with five in the home half of the inning to retake the lead but Green River would score four in the fifth and one more in the sixth off of Napier who took over pitching duties in the fourth.

Napier and Mallori Cossell were both 2-for-4 in the nightcap. Each team surrendered eight walks.

The Gators (1-2) were led by Ashley Starke who was 4-for-5. Kenicia McClellan drove in five runs. 

The Tritons host South Puget Sound for a non-league twinbill on Friday, March 14. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.

Offense Continues Streak as EdCC Wins Twice

WENATCHEE -- The Edmonds CC offense put up double-digit runs two more times on Saturday in a 11-6 win over Everett and a 10-2 victory over hosts Wenatchee Valley. It was the fourth straight game that the Tritons (6-1) posted at least 10 runs (the box currently says 9 runs, but that is incorrect). 

EdCC scored in the first five innings of its morning tilt with Everett. A three-run first was followed by a run in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and a four-spot in the fifth. 

The Trojans plated runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth but the scoring came to an end once relievers Josh Evans and Alex Kuniyoshi got on the mound. Evans tossed a scoreless seventh with Kuniyoshi throwing two perfect frames.

Colin Samuelson started for EdCC and lasted four innings before giving way to Austin Lee (1-0). Lee toed the rubber for two frames, giving up one earned run.

Jake Thomas (0-1) was Everett's starter. He was hit around for seven runs (four earned) in just three innings. 

The Edmonds offense collected 15 hits. Kyle Olson, TJ Florentine and Ryan Budnick each had three hits with Olson and Budnick driving in three runs apiece. Matt Becker and Ryan Archibald were both 2-for-4. 

The offense didn't slow down in the nightcap with Wenatchee Valley, though it took awhile. After three scoreless frames the Tritons scored three times in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead and support starter Zach Johnson's efforts. 

Florentine started the rally with a walk. He then stole second, reached third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Budnick also walked and scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Baker followed with a single and stole second in front of a RBI hit by Ben Roquet. 

Roquet would double and score on a ground out by Keanu Puha in the seventh to put EdCC up 4-1. A six-run eighth put the game in control of EdCC and up the team's win streak to six. WVC (0-3) ended the day's scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Matt Becker and Tyler Reeves three in relief of Johnson. Puha, Roquet and Brian Orendor would each drive in two runs for the Tritons. Roquet and Connor Plaisance had two hits apiece. 

Edmonds has a few days off before hosting Vancouver Island for a twinbill at Triton Field on Saturday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm. 

Tritons Post Two Wins in Wenatchee

WENATCHEE -- The Edmonds CC baseball team posted a pair of wins Friday, beating Everett 10-6 and Wenatchee Valley 17-0. Starters Torin Dooley and Andrew Kemmerer each earned a win while the Triton offense pounded out 27 runs on 31 hits.

Dooley (1-0) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of the afternoon game versus defending champions Everett. The offense had scored 9 runs behind him. The Trojans scored four runs in the fifth to close the gap to five and then pulled closer with a single runs in the sixth and ninth, but EvCC could get no closer against reliever Kevin Lanto who closed out the game with three solid innings of work.

The Tritons put up 14 hits against two Knight hurlers, including 10 hits and 8 runs on starter Anthony Blackie. A 5-run second, followed by three more runs in the third, chased Blackie in favor of Tanner Braun.

Six EdCC batters had at least two hits paced by 3-for-4 games by outfielder Matt Becker and second baseman Tyler Baker. First baseman Ryan Budnick, third baseman Jaime Umbinetti, catcher Tanner Wessling and outfielder Chris Osbourne had two hits each.

Due to an extra-inning contest between Everett and WVC in the afternoon, EdCC's nightcap did not wrap up play until 11:27 pm. The Tritons didn't have any issues with the late time, playing flawlessly on the mound, in the field and at the plate.

Kemmerer (2-0) tossed six shutout innings, yielding just one hit and fanning 11 batters. The sophomore right hander now has 24 strikeouts in two starts.

EdCC led 9-0 by the time Kemmerer was removed in favor of Kameron Minor in the seventh. The Tritons would score in every inning but the seventh, capped by an 8-run eighth. Josh Evans threw a perfect eighth for EdCC before play was halted.

Edmonds pounded out 17 hits led by Becker, Kyle Olson and Ryan Archibald with four hits apiece. Becker drove in 3 runs and scored 5 times with Olson hitting a homer and plating four runners. Keanu Puha was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Edmonds (4-1) faces Everett at 10:30 am, followed by a 1:00 pm tilt versus Wentatchee Valley.

Tritons Drop 5th Place Game to Clark

KENNEWICK --(from NWAACC.org) --  Edmonds CC wrapped up the 2013-14 campaign with a 74-65 loss to Clark College Tuesday afternoon in the NWAACC fifth-place game held in the Toyota Center. EdCC ended up finishing sixth at the 2014 tournament.

But the biggest story of the contest - literally - was the second rebound of the game for Triton 7-foot post Payton Pervier. With that board, Pervier broke the all-time record for rebounding at the tournament with his 70th rebound. By the final buzzer, Pervier had set the mark at 81 boards. He was later selected to the NWAACC All-Tournament 1st Team.

Pervier was tied for team-high scoring honors with 11 points and he had blocked 7 shots, but the Tritons had trouble containing a balanced scoring attack from Clark. The Penguins had four players in double figures, led by Max Livingston's 16 points. Sean Price came down with 13 rebounds.

The two teams traded buckets for much of the first half, with neither squad holding an edge larger than Edmonds' seven point lead at the 13:48 mark of the initial period. Price connected on a field goal with six seconds left in the half to give the Penguins a 40-36 lead at the break.

The Tritons didn't score for the first four minutes of the period, and found themselves down by 17 points in a flash. At the midway mark, Clark jumped on top by 18 points on a field goal from Ronalds Elksnis, but Edmonds used a 12-4 run to get within ten.

With a minute to go, they'd fought to within seven points, but it was too late. Clark hit nearly all of their free throws in the final minute to hang on and win by 11, at 75-64.

It was an off-shooting day for Edmonds, a 180 from the day before. The Tritons shot just 34 percent (24 of 70) against Clark and made only 29 percent (8 of 28) of their 3-pointers. Edmonds would make just 9 of 17 from the free throw line as well.

EdCC sophomores Badhasa Margarsa and Stefan Johnson played in their final game in a Triton uniform. Margarsa had 8 points, 5 assists and 5 boards with Johnson adding 9 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman guard Devin Stoen came off the bench to score 11 points. Fellow freshmen Zach Pederson and Sam Omondi each chipped in with 9 points.

The Tritons end the year with a 19-12 overall record. The top-ranked Penguins, champions of the West Region, finish 27-2.

Tritons Cage Sasquatch, Advance to 5th Place Game

KENNEWICK -- The Edmonds CC men's basketball team shook off a tough loss in the NWAACC quarterfinals and beat Spokane 92-70 Monday afternoon in a loser-out game in the Toyota Center. With the win the Tritons advance to the tournament's fifth-place game against No. 1-ranked Clark College Tuesday at noon. 

EdCC improved to 19-11 on the year while Spokane finished the season 18-13. The Tritons have defeated the Sasquatch two years straight at NWAACC championships.

Four players scored in double-figures for EdCC, led by 19 points and 25 rebounds from freshman center Payton Pervier. The 7-footer has 68 rebounds so far at the tournament, one shy from the record of 69 set Chemeketa's Chehalis Tapscott in 2011.  Pervier will have one more game to set a new mark. Pervier shot 69 percent (9-of-13) against Spokane and had 5 blocks and 4 steals.

Monday's game was close through the first 14 minutes of play. Edmonds led by seven at the break (47-40) and began to put the game away during the first few minutes of the second half. 

The Sasquatch didn't score until they'd played more than three and a half minutes of the second, during which time the Tritons had jumped on top by 16 points at 56-40. Spokane battled to within nine points on a putback bucket from Swinn Hanson with 13 minutes to go, but Edmonds scored the next 11 points to push their lead to 18 points at the midway mark of the second half.

By the time the starters were pulled with little more than two minutes to go, the game was far out of hand. Edmonds led by 21 points, and by 24 points on a three pointer from Mitchl Pohrman before winning by 22.

In addition to Pervier's monster performance, the Tritons got a solid contribution from Badhasa Margarsa, who netted 18 points and dished eight assists. Charlie Smith came off the bench to score 14 points with Zach Pederson adding 10 points. 

Hanson led all scores, putting up 25 points for Spokane in the loss. 

Clark (26-2) is ranked No. 1 overall and looked to be the favorite heading into Saturday, but a loss to Skagit Valley in the quarterfinals dropped the Penguins into the loser's bracket. 

Tritons Win Behind 7-Run Third

LYNNWOOD -- The weather still wasn't cooperating but that didn't stop Edmonds CC from posting an 8-4 victory over Mt. Hood at Triton Field Sunday afternoon. EdCC improved to 2-1 on the year with the win and dropped the Saints to 0-3. The team's game versus Vancouver Island scheduled for 4:15 pm was cancelled due to rain.

The Tritons didn't waste any time, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Matt Becker singled, stole both second and third, and then scored on a sac fly from Ryan Budnick.

Edmonds put up seven runs in the third after sending 12 batters to the plate. Budnick and Keanu Puha collected back-to-back two-run doubles to lead the Triton outburst. 

The Saints would score four runs in the next half inning when Nick Gawley clubbed a grand slam to left. But that blast would end the game's scoring. 

Triton lefty Zach Johnson (1-0) picked up the win after a six inning start in which he yielded four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Austin Lee threw three scoreless frames for the save.

Michael McCall (0-1) suffered the loss for Mt. Hood after he gave up eight earned runs in just three innings of work.

Edmonds had eight hits with Budnick and Becker each going 2-for-4. 

The Tritons will travel to Wenatchee next Saturday for four games over the weekend there with hosts Wenatchee Valley and Everett. 

Lead and Game Slips Away for EdCC Hoops

KENNEWICK -- The Edmonds Community College men's basketball team fell to Pierce 85-63 Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NWAACC championships held in the Tri-Cities Toyota Center. The loss dropped the Tritons into the loser's bracket where they will face Spokane 2 pm Monday. The best that EdCC can do now is fifth place.  

Sunday's contest against the fourth-ranked Raiders looked promising early on for Edmonds. The Tritons had an 8-point, first-half lead until a 16-2 run by Pierce College to end the half put EdCC in the hole 48-42. The Pierce run was ignited by guard Gary Jacobs who sank a pair of 3-pointers, followed by a steal and a layup for eight straight Raider points. 

Pierce (22-6) stretched  its run to 14 consecutive points to start the second. They jumped out on top by 13 after five minutes of play on a 3-pointer from Jacobs and pushed their advantage to 25 on a fast break bucket from sophomore Isaiah Barsh. The Tritons could get no closer than 18 the rest of the way, eventually falling by 22. Pierce moves onto the semifinals to play Highline. 

The Raiders outshot the Tritons 51 to 35 percent  and forced 19 turnovers which were turned into 23 points. Pierce was also good on 43 percent of its 3-point attempts (6 of 14), while EdCC made just 4 of 18 (22 percent) from behind the arc. 

Jacobs had 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals for Pierce. Devin Matthews dished out 13 assists for the Raiders with Paul Loranger contributing 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Edmonds (18-11) was paced by Payton Pervier's 24 points and 20 rebounds. The freshman center scored 20 of his points in the first half, however. Charlie Smith came off the bench to score 14 points with Samuel Omondi adding 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Edmonds Bounces Back to Top Mt. Hood

LYNNWOOD - Neither rain, snow or delays could stop Edmonds from getting in its game against Mt. Hood at Triton Field Saturday evening. In spite of the poor weather and nine hours of waiting to take the hill, Triton starter Andrew Kemmerer threw seven solid innings against the Saints to lead EdCC to a 9-2 win.

Kemmerer (1-0) was the team's closer last year but was moved to the rotation for 2014. The sophomore made the transition look easy on Saturday, allowing just one run on five hits. The hard throwing right-hander also fanned 13 batters in his season debut. Kevin Lanto and Alex Kuniyoshi each toed the rubber for an inning of relief.

Meanwhile, the Edmonds offense, which was held in check earlier in the day by Vancouver Island, broke through with 13 hits -- five of which were of the extra base variety. EdCC would plate runs in all but two innings against MHCC. 

Third baseman Jaime Umbinetti went 3-for-4 for Edmonds while outfielders Matt Becker and Keanu Puha each went 2-for-4. DH Chris Osborne slammed a two-run home run in the eighth to cap of the day's scoring. 

Mt. Hood (0-2) managed just five hits against three Triton hurlers. Taking the loss was Clint Burris (0-1) who surrendered five runs (two earned) in five innings of work.

The Tritons (1-1) are back at it Sunday starting with an 11 am game against Mt. Hood. EdCC later takes on Vancouver Island at 3:15 pm. The Mt. Hood game was originally scheduled for 10 am but was moved back an hour due to Saturday's late finish.

Edmonds Falls to VIU in Opening Day Tilt

LYNNWOOD -- It was cold, it was raining and it was actually snowing on Triton Field Saturday. Despite the poor weather conditions and despite a delay in the start of the game due to Vancouver Island taking longer than expected to cross the border, Edmonds opened the 2014 season against the non-NWAACC opponent.

Once play began it was Vancouver Island beating the Tritons 4-0. VIU will take on Mt. Hood at 5 pm with EdCC meeting Mt. Hood afterwards.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth. That's when the Mariners broke through for three runs off of EdCC starter Collin Samuelson (0-1) for all the runs they would need. Roman Mitchell took over in the sixth and lasted for two innings, allowing one run on two hits. Kameron Miner tossed three scoreless frames.

Edmonds collected just six hits as a team, compared to eight from the four-year Canadian club team. Left fielder Keanu Puha was 2-for-3 to lead EdCC. TC Florentine, Tyler Baker and Jamie Umbinetti had one hit apiece.

Connor Russell (1-0) earned the win with a six-inning stint for VIU. John Kaluzniak tossed three scoreless frames to pick up the save. 

Tritons Stun Treasure Valley in NWAACC Opener

KENNEWICK – The EdCC men’s basketball team upset second-ranked Treasure Valley 77-70 in opening round of the NWAACC Championships at the Tri-Cities Toyota Center on Saturday. The victory propels Edmonds into the second round of the winner’s bracket and into a noon meeting with fourth-ranked Pierce on Sunday. Pierce defeated Southwest Oregon 86-75 earlier in the day.

The Tritons, runners up in 2013, entered this year’s tournament as a No. 4 seed while the East champion Chukars entered as a No. 1 seed. Rankings made little difference to EdCC which has proved that they can compete with—and beat—anyone. The going against TVCC wasn’t easy, however. 

The two teams combined for 13 lead changes in the first half, going into the locker room at a 35-35 tie.  The game was no different in the second, with the teams entertaining the crowd with 10 ties and 19 lead changes. 

Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field and neither did much from beyond the arc or at the free throw line. What eventually swung the win to Edmonds was rebounding a defense. The Tritons pulled in 60 boards compared to just 38 from TVCC. Because of this advantage, EdCC was able to score 18 second-chance points, while the Chukars managed just two second-chance points.

A tight contest throughout, the two teams entered the break even at 35. Edmonds staggered out of the break, though, and trailed by five, 42-37 at the 15-minute mark. The Tritons slowly started to build momentum and closed to within a point (50-49) at 9:00. With 7:30 remaining it was Edmonds leading 54-53.

EdCC built its lead to four points and was up by six with a minute remaining. The Tritons finally started sinking their shots at the stripe and managed to stay out in front when TVCC was forced to foul late.

Center Payton Pervier had 15 points and 23 rebounds to lead Edmonds’ balanced attack. Sam Omondi contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds with Badhasa Margarsa, Ramsey Rosales and Zach Pederson each adding 9 points. Margasa and Philip Maxie each dished out 4 assists.

The Tritons improved to 18-10 on the year and dropped Treasure Valley to 18-9. The Chukars play Southwest Oregon at 8 am Sunday in a loser-out game.

Edmonds and Pierce (21-6) played earlier this season with the Tritons coming out on top in Seaview Gym 85-82. Margarsa had 20 points in that contest with Pederson scoring 17. Gary Jacobs and Chris Parker led the Raiders with 20 and 17 points respectively.
