Have Mercy! Softball Sweeps Blue Mountain

PENDELTON, OR -- The EdCC softball team swept Blue Mountain in a non-league twinbill on Saturday by scores of 12-1 and 15-6 Both contests were halted due to the 8-run mercy-rule. Edmonds improved to 9-3 on the year.

Blue Mountain scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the first of the opening game, helped out by an EdCC error, but it was all Tritons from that point on. Edmonds scored four in the second, two in the third, one in both the fourth and fifth and then four in the top of the sixth. 

EdCC collected 13 hits in the game, led by a two hits by Chantel Brown, Reagan Ingersoll, Tia Hedmand and Bailee Senner. Senner blasted her second round-tripper of the season, a grand-slam, and drove in five. Hedman scored four runs and Hanna Wilcox had three RBI.

Picking up the win was Hailey Malakowski who went six frames, allowing one run on six hits. 

Edmonds scored in every inning of game two as well, thanks to 16 hits, three of those were homers by Kristina West, Kamryn Kanae and Hedman. The Tritons have now hit 18 homer runs on the year. West and Chantel Brown each had three RBI, Antionette Watson had two RBI. 

Brown and Hedman had three hits apiece, with Watson, Kanae, West and Senner with two each.

Madison Budnick started and went 2.2 innings before giving way to Malakowski (7-3). The freshman earned the win with 2.1 frames of relief. 

Edmonds opens North Region play on Saturday, April 2, at Bellevue. First pitch is slated for 2 pm. The Bulldogs are playing at Robinswood Park (off of 148th, about 2 blocks from campus) this year while their campus field undergoes renovations. 

Tritons Walk Off LC in 19th To Earn Series Split

LYNNWOOD – NWAC No. 3-ranked Edmonds swept No. 2 Lower Columbia at home Saturday, 6-3 and 2-1. Justin Polzin's line drive walk off in the 19th inning capped the dramatic nightcap. With the two triumphs at home Edmonds split the series with the defending NWAC champions. it was LCC sweeping Edmonds the day before, in Longview, 8-2 and 7-6. 

The pitching was the story in game two Saturday as 18 consecutive innings came and went with no runs being scored. Both staffs weathered storms, wiggling out of several jams throughout the contest.

The 19th provided all 3 runs of the game, first with a Lower Columbia sac fly by Cameron Campbell in the top half. Edmonds answered in the bottom: Chris Okura beat out an infield single, Hunter Henry drew a walk, and both moved up on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Shane Hanon worked a 3-2 count and walked to load the bases. Zach Needham then tied the game at 1-1 with another walk. The stage was set for freshman catcher Justin Polzin.

Polzin, who had not reached base in his previous 7 plate appearances, followed with a line drive to deep center field scoring the game winner. Final score: Edmonds 2, Lower Columbia 1. The Tritons extra-inning instant classic stamped the end of their non-league slate.

There were notable pitching performances on both sides. For Edmonds, Blake Randazzo started and tossed 7 shutout innings. Jason Shevenko (3 IP), Kelly Fromm (6 IP), and Nick Johnston (2 IP) also allowed no runs to cross. LC's starter Tyler Parsons logged 8 plus scoreless innings and reliever Max Tilton was equally impressive, throwing 8 plus innings of zeroes himself.

Edmonds came from behind in the opener, trailing 2-0 after 4 innings. They tied the game in the 5th and used a 4-run 6th to pull ahead for good. C.J. Blowers got the win and Austin Whitehouse earned the saved. Chris Okura and Steven Weber were both 2-for-3 with multiple RBI's.

EdCC (11-5) opens NWAC North Region play at home, Saturday April 2nd when local foe Shoreline (5-11) comes to Triton Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is 1 pm. In a change this year, both league contents will now be 9 inning games. The Tritons are the two-time defending North Region champions.

Twenty-Four Tritons Earn 3.50 or Better GPA

Twenty-four EdCC student-athletes notched at least a 3.50 GPA this past winter quarter, led by Sheriff Conta and Olivia Olason who both earned a perfect 4.0! Congratulations to all of our student-athletes and thanks for your hard work on the playing field/ court and in the classroom!

EdCC Softball Sweeps Olympic


LYNNWOOD – The Edmonds CC softball team hits six home runs in sweeping a non-league doubleheader from visiting Olympic College Wednesday afternoon at Triton Field, 13-5 and 19-0. Both contests were halted in the fifth inning due to the 8-run mercy rule. EdCC has now won four-straight and improved to 7-3 in the season. The Rangers dropped to 2-11.

Hailey Malakowsi (4-3) started the opener and lasted four innings in which she allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits. Madison Budnick tossed a perfect fifth to seal the win and struck out two batters.

The Triton offense collected 12 hits, led by Madison Wood’s 4-for-4 effort. Wood hit for the cycle in the game, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Chantel Brown, Kristina West and Kamryn Kanae had two hits apiece.

The game was close early with OC holding onto a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. That’s when Edmonds sent 10 batters to the plate and exploded for seven runs. Wood blasted a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Tritons an 8-run lead and the walk-off win.

It was all EdCC all the time in the nightcap. The Tritons had 14 hits overall. Edmonds scored four runs in the first, 10 in the second and five in the third inning. Paige Matsuki, Tia Hedman, Bailee Senner, Antionette Watson and Kanae and cracked round-trippers in the game, with Kanae’s being of the grand-slam variety.

Kanae led EdCC with four hits and 7 RBI. Watson drove in 3 runs and did Senner.

Budnick (2-0) went the distance and tossed the shutout. The freshman allowed 3 hits and struck out 3 batters.

Edmonds will be on the road for their next two doubleheaders, a non-league DH at Blue Mountain this coming Saturday and the opening of North Region play on Saturday, April 2 at Bellevue.

Triton Baseball Takes 3 of 4 In T-Cup Series

LYNNWOOD – Triton Baseball took 3 of 4 games this past weekend in the T-cup Tournament, hosted by Edmonds CC and the Everett CC Trojans. Six teams split games between Triton Field and Everett Memorial Stadium Friday through Sunday. North Region hosts EdCC and EvCC both finished 3-1 on the weekend.  

Friday’s nightcap against Tacoma was knotted at 2-2 until sophomore Steven Weber (Seattle, Wash.) sent a bases clearing 2-out line drive into the right field corner scoring the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the 8th. Edmonds had the bases loaded in the 6th and 7th inning as well but were unable to break through until Weber’s double. 

Nick Johnston earned his second win of the year in relief, and Robbie Watson notched the save. Weber finished with 4 RBI and Zach Needham (Puyallup, Wash.) collected 2 hits in the win. Tacoma suffered their first loss of the season.

In the first game Saturday Yakima took an early 2-0 lead but Edmonds rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the 3rd and never looked back. Another Triton 6-spot in the 4th inning put the game out of reach. Freshman Daniel Bateman (Anacortes, Wash.) had a monster game offensively launching 2 home runs into the left field netting. He was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. 

While C.J. Blowers (Graham, Wash.) kept the Yaks’ bats in check in his first collegiate start, the Tritons used a 14-hit attack to trump Yakima 14-2. Garrett Gallinger (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Taylor Poffenroth (Kent, Wash.), and Justin Polzin (Yelm, Wash.) each had 2 hits. Chris Okura (Woodinville, Wash.) blasted the first home run of his college career in bottom of the 7th.

The nightcap between Edmonds and Pierce ended up going three extra frames before the Raiders completed the comeback victory 7-5. The Tritons led 4-1 after four innings, but the Raiders fought and clawed their way back in it, scoring one run in the 5th, two in the 7th, and one in the 8th inning to extend the contest. 

Jesse Moore (Port Orchard, Wash.) got Edmonds off to a good start in the bottom of the 1st  when he hit a 2-run bomb that not only cleared the netting in left field, but also the horticulture building behind it. 

Pierce’s Andrew Barrera (Kent, Wash.) put Pierce on his back with the game-tying and game-winning knocks. In the 8th he tripled to right field to tie the game; in the 12th – and with the infield in – he singled into center to lift the Raiders to victory. The Tritons’ Austin Whitehouse pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Shane Hanon (Gig Harbor, Wash.) was 3-for-4 in the losing effort.

On Sunday Jesse Moore started the Tritons again in the 1st with a 2-run shot, and gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Edmonds topped Mt. Hood 9-5 to earn their 3rd victory of the weekend. 

Brian Way (Sitka, Alaska) picked up the winning decision on the bump and Jake Malone (Covington, Wash.) was 4-for-4 with a triple. Shane Hanon added 2 knocks. Weber, Moore, and Bateman have all jacked three home runs on the year, tied for 2nd best in the NWAC. 

Edmonds has 10 home runs this year as a team. Moore’s 17 RBI are tied for the most in the NWAC. EdCC (9-3) plays one more non-league series with Lower Columbia (10-2) before North Region play begins. 

Lower Columbia is the defending NWAC champion; the Tritons took home the title in 2014. Friday’s doubleheader starts at 1 pm in Longview at David Story Field. 

Saturday’s twin bill shifts back to Triton Field – first pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.

Tritons Blank Pierce

LYNNWOOD -- Brian Way went six scoreless innings with Jared Gray and Nick Johnston coming out of the pen to to combine on a 5-hit shutout as Edmonds  defeated visiting Pierce College 4-0 Saturday at Triton Field. EdCC improved to 6-2 overall while the Red Raiders slipped to 2-4 on the season. 


The non-league contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Spencer Greene started things off with a single and moved to third on a Shane Hanon double. After a walk to Zach Needham to load the sacks it was Jesse Moore coming through with a 2-run double. 

The Tritons added two more runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from Garrett Gallinger and Griffin Meyers sac-fly. 

EdCC hurlers and defense did the rest. Moore collected two of seven EdCC hits on the day. 

Way (2-0) fanned three batters in his six-inning stint, Gray struck out two and Johnston one. 

The Tritons host Yakima Valley, Tacoma, Mt. Hood and Pierce this coming weekend. EdCC's first game is Saturday vs. YVCC at 11:00 am.

Triton Softball Sweeps Big Bend

LYNNWOOD – The EdCC softball team swept visiting Big Bend in a non-league twinbill at Triton Field Tuesday, 5-4 and 7-3. With the two triumphs the Tritons snap a three-game skid and improve to 5-3 overall.

Things were looking bad for Edmonds in the opener after the Vikings took a 4-0 lead, scoring twice in both the fourth and sixth innings. 

The Tritons responded with a 5-run home half of the sixth, however. Kamryn Kanae got the offense going by smashing a solo homer to left field. Tia Hedman walked with pinch runner Kelsey Quibilan swiping second base. Bailee Senner followed with a RBI triple and was driven home by a single from Clara Inovejas.

After an out was recorded, Kristina West was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Regan Ingersoll came through with a RBI single to even the score at 4-4. A sac fly from Hannah Wilcox plated West for the fifth and final run of the game.

The Tritons outhit the Vikings 9-5 in the opener with Paige Matsuki, Ingersoll and Kanae with two hits apiece.

Earning the win was Madison Budnick (1-0) who tossed three frames of relief in which she allowed two runs on three hits. Hailey Malakowski started for Edmonds and lasted four innings.

Olivia Harrison (0-2) was hung with the loss for Big Bend. She worked out of a few threats until the Tritons got to her in the sixth.

Edmonds collected 11 hits to seven from Big Bend in the nightcap. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. The first three Tritons, Inovejas, West and Ingersoll had hits with Ingersoll and Kanae both driving in runs.

The Tritons scored three times in the third, highlighted by a mammoth two-run homer from Madison Wood. Hedman singled in Matsuki for the third run of the frame.

The Vikings got a run closer in the sixth, but Edmonds responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the innings. Chantel Brown laced a liner to right center and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park round tripper. Matsuki drove in the final run of the inning and the game with a single.

Malakowski (4-3) went the distance, yielding three runs on seven hits. Shayla Baker (1-2) was hung with the loss for Big Bend (1-5).

Inovejas led EdCC with three hits with Matsuki going 2-for-4.

The Tritons will travel to Clark College this coming Saturday for a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.

Softball Opens 2016 With a Bang

RICHLAND -- The EdCC softball team opened the 2016 season by recording three wins over NWAC East teams as part of the Preseason Tournament in the Tri-Cities. Edmonds recorded two wins on Saturday, defeating Wenatchee Valley 12-7 and Big Bend 8-7, On Sunday the Tritons routed Treasure Valley 19-2 before dropping the finale 10-2 to Blue Mountain.

Three contests were halted due to the 8 run mercy rule with game two vs Big Bend a walk-off win for Edmonds. 

The Tritons batted .342 as a team and blasted 5 home runs. Hitting round-trippers was Maddie Wood, Paige Matsuki (2), KamrynMae Kanae and Antionette Watson. Kanae had 8 RBI over the weekend with Matsuki driving in 7 and both Wood and Kristina West plating 5 runners. 

Chantel Brown scored 8 times as did Matsuki, with West scoring 7 times in the four games. 

Pitcher Haley Malakowski saw action in all four games and went 3-1 for EdCC. The freshman hurler fanned 16 batters in 20.2 innings of work. Madison Budnick pitched in two contests. 

The Tritons will be in Lacey, WA, for the NWAC Interegion Tournament this Saturday. EdCC has its home opener on Tuesday, March 8, welcoming Big Bend for a DH that starts at 3 pm.
