LYNNWOOD – The Edmonds CC softball team hits six home runs
in sweeping a non-league doubleheader from visiting Olympic College Wednesday
afternoon at Triton Field, 13-5 and 19-0. Both contests were halted in the
fifth inning due to the 8-run mercy rule. EdCC has now won four-straight and improved to 7-3 in the season. The Rangers dropped to 2-11.
Hailey Malakowsi (4-3) started the opener and lasted four
innings in which she allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits. Madison Budnick tossed
a perfect fifth to seal the win and struck out two batters.
The Triton offense collected 12 hits, led by Madison Wood’s
4-for-4 effort. Wood hit for the cycle in the game, scoring three times and
driving in three runs. Chantel Brown, Kristina West and Kamryn Kanae had two
hits apiece.
The game was close early with OC holding onto a 5-4 lead heading
into the bottom of the fourth. That’s when Edmonds sent 10 batters to the plate
and exploded for seven runs. Wood blasted a 2-run homer in the bottom of the
fifth to give the Tritons an 8-run lead and the walk-off win.
It was all EdCC all the time in the nightcap. The Tritons had
14 hits overall. Edmonds scored four runs in the first, 10 in the second and
five in the third inning. Paige Matsuki, Tia Hedman, Bailee Senner, Antionette
Watson and Kanae and cracked round-trippers in the game, with Kanae’s being of
the grand-slam variety.
Kanae led EdCC with four hits and 7 RBI. Watson drove in 3
runs and did Senner.
Budnick (2-0) went the distance and tossed the shutout. The
freshman allowed 3 hits and struck out 3 batters.
Edmonds will be on the road for their next two
doubleheaders, a non-league DH at Blue Mountain this coming Saturday and the
opening of North Region play on Saturday, April 2 at Bellevue.
