Softball Notches Sweep of South Puget Sound

LYNNWOOD -- Thanks to an explosive offense and gritty relief pitching from Madisyn Napier, the Edmonds CC softball team recorded a sweep of South Puget Sound Friday afternoon at Triton Field, 14-9 and 15-14(8). The doubleheader sweep is the first for the EdCC softball program since May 12, 2006. With the two wins the Tritons improved to 3-3 on the season.

Edmonds scored 29 runs on 32 hits in the wild twinbill. The Tritons pounced for seven runs after two innings in the opener, but the visiting Clippers would plate five runs in the top of the third off EdCC starter Faith Clark.

Edmonds responded with four in the home half of the inning but SPSCC kept battling, scoring three more in the fourth off of Napier. The Triton sophomore settled in, however, and would only yield one more run over the next two frames, which included a scoreless sixth and seventh. The Tritons added two more runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth for the 14-9 final.

Three Tritons had three hits apiece: Napier, Alex Deaver and Mallori Cossell. Deaver scored three times and drove in four runners. Cossell and Shawna Steele had two RBI apiece.

The nightcap started bleakly for Edmonds when the Clippers plated seven runs in their first at-bat. It was 8-0 SPSCC after an inning and a half. Napier, who started in right field, was called back into the circle with one out in the second. The converted pitcher would throw 6.2 frames in relief and give her team a chance to get back into the game.

That's just what the Tritons did.

Edmonds scored one run in the second, three in the third and then exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Designated player Arista Honey homered and doubled in two in that inning -- just missing her second home run by inches.

The score was now 11-10 Edmonds but the lead quickly vanished when the Clippers scored three times in the sixth and once more in the seventh.

But the never-say-die Tritons came through with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to even the score at 14-all and send the game into extra-innings.

Napier set the Clippers down without a run in the eighth and set up EdCC with a chance to walk away with the win in the home half of the inning.

Lexie Gray started things off with a single but was eliminated on a force out. First baseman Savannah Fortney reached on the force and was replaced by pinch-runner Anna-Nicole Murphy. After another hit and a walk to Honey, Deaver lined a single to right to plate Murphy with the winning run.

Napier (2-1) not only picked up the win in both games, in game two she was 4-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBI, two inside-the-park homers and a stolen base. Deaver, Honey, Steele and Cossell had two hits each with Steele and Fortney both driving in two.
